In the process of making metal building components, Star Buildings cuts lengths of
steel to different specifications based on the building model being produced. The
process of cutting involves the use of a Trumpf 4000 Watt Laser System. The laser
system process is the result of concentrating a high energy beam of light on the
surface of the steel plate.Nitrogen and oxygen gas assist in the cutting process which
ionizes the steel
A Star Buildings' laser sheet cutting process generates hazardous waste, called metal
dust in only one way. Sheet steel is conveyed onto the slat cutting table where the
cutting takes place. A Torit brand Downflo Dust Collector, fixed in place, exhausts
smoke and debris from the Trumpf laser cutting process. The Torit unit Model#DFT-
3-6 is equipped with six paper pleated filters with a combined surface area of 912
square feet. An air assist is provided to improve the exhaust efficiency. The
manufacturers rating of filter efficiency is .005.
Smoke and dust collected during the cutting process is collected in a•55 gallon DOT
approved fiber drums for storage and pickup. The current waste generated cannot be
resold or recycled and therefore has to be disposed of as hazardous waste. A certified
analytical report shows that there are trace amounts of copper, lead, and zinc,
measured in micrograms per liter. The waste is transported in 55 gallon DOT
approved fiber drums for storage and pickup. This waste is stored for 90 days, or less,
and then transported by North State Environmental on a periodic basis to Chemical
Waste Management, 35251 Old Skyline Road, Kettleman City, CA 93239, a licensed
hazardous waste management company.
• Assessment of the effect of each implemented hazardous waste management approach
since the baseline year of 2002:
No current management approach has yet to be adopted, other than recycling
• Describe factors affecting major waste streams:
1) Changes in business activity: Hazardous waste generation has increased due to
increased business activity.
2) Changes in waste classification by the government: There have been no changes
in waste classification that affects Star Buildings.
3) Natural phenomena: N/A
(d) CWC Code# 331 - Paint Pigment/Paint Solids
• Give an estimate, in pounds, of the quantity of hazardous waste generated, and
quantity of hazardous waste managed, both on-site and off-site, during the current
reporting year and during the baseline year:
23
