Presently we only have three hazardous waste streams: Waste hydraulic and
motor oil, oil and absorbent, and flammable, waste ink from our video jet. The waste oil and ink are
recycled, however the oil and absorbent is land filled through our TSDF. We continuously monitor the
use of our oil and ink to ensure that only the necessary amounts are used. The oil and ink is changed
only when necessary for the maintenance of our equipment. We are trying to find a preferred absorbent
to absorb more of the waste product, therefore producing less waste. Typically, every ninety(90)days
the accumulation of theses waste streams amounts to six(6) 55 gal drums of waste oil, 4000 lbs of oil
and absorbent,two(2) gallons of waste ink. We are aware of the costs to dispose of these wastes as
well as the state and local fees for generation and disposal, therefore we constantly try to reduce the
quantity of waste generated.
I have also examined the hazardous waste manifests for 1995 and 1996 in an attempt to determine why
the totals for each year have a large difference. It seems that in 1995 there was much more paint waste
generated than in 1996. There are two occasions, in September and February, where eight(8)tons or
more of paint waste was disposed of. These amounts far exceed the total quantity of paint waste in
1996, 1.5 tons. My research suggests the following reasons as sources of the unusual amount of paint
waste generated and disposed of in 1995: most of the ten(10)yards (8.4 tons) disposed of in February
of 1995 was generated in 1994 and stockpiled, in 1995 paint was being tested and supplied from three
different manufacturers, a new vacuum painting system was installed, a new dip tank was installed
with a capacity of 750 gallons of paint, badly needed housekeeping and cleaning work was performed,
and our volume of business was higher.
I hope all of your questions have been answered regarding this matter and our waste reduction. Please
call me if you need any further assistance. Thank you.
Sincerely,
remy Ball
Manufacturing Engineer
.GER,,,,
cc: Paul Hodnett 1
12101 East Brandt Road, Lockeford, CA 95237 •4FGGPFO'
