STAR BUILDING SYSTEMS —LOCKEFORD <br /> ORIENTATION FOR NEW EMPLOYEES <br /> SECTION 3 <br /> Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) <br /> Hazardous materials and chemicals such as paint,gasoline, toluene, xylene, propane, cleaning solvents,compressed <br /> gas cylinders,oils,hydraulic fluids are in every department.These chemicals or compounds can be flammable, <br /> explosive, corrosive,reactive, toxic or even carcinogenic and present a serious hazard to you and your well being. <br /> Hazardous wastes, such as paint, gasoline, toluene, xylene,propane,and cleaning solvents are not to be placed in <br /> drums or any containers unless properly labeled. Material safety data sheets(MSDSs)are on file in your supervisor's <br /> office and also in the Human Resources office for your education and training. Know the hazards that exist around <br /> you. <br /> 1. Read labels and MSDSs. <br /> 2. Know where to find information about chemicals. <br /> 3. Follow warnings and instructions. <br /> 4. Use the correct protective clothing and equipment when handling hazardous substances. <br /> 5. Learn the emergency procedures. <br /> 6. Practice sensible,safe work habits. <br /> 7. When in doubt ask your supervisor or lead person. <br /> During the accumulation stage of hazardous waste the container must be labeled as hazardous waste and a lid must <br /> cover the container. As soon as the drum or container is completely filled, the hazardous waste label must be dated <br /> and the container placed in the hazardous waste storage area. The Environmental coordinator must be notified <br /> immediately when a drum of hazardous waste is dated and moved to the outside storage area. All such hazardous <br /> waste containers must be disposed of within 90 days of the date noted on the hazardous waste label. <br /> Use the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). They are your safety guides to hazardous waste. <br /> The MSDS explains what a substance hazard is, how to handle the substance safely, and the steps to take if you have <br /> a problem.A Material Safety Data Sheet explains the following: <br /> It tells about the chemical's: <br /> I. Hazardous ingredients. <br /> 2. Physical and chemical characteristics. <br /> 3. Potential for hazards as fire, explosion, or reaction. <br /> 4. Possible health hazards and symptoms. <br /> 5. Routes of entry into your body(absorption, inhalation,etc.). <br /> 6. Exposure limits and carcinogenic listing. <br /> The Material Safety Data Sheet also tells you how to use the chemical safely: <br /> 1. Work procedures <br /> 2. Hygiene <br /> 3. Protective equipment <br /> If there is a problem,the MSDS explains what to do about: <br /> 1. Spills and leaks <br /> 2. Emergencies <br /> 3.
