ST. JOSEPH'S MEDICAL CENTER
MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT
POLICY
Policy: Hazardous materials handling
Policy Statement: Hazardous materials used by the maintenance department can
create unique problems in the environment and for employee
safety, therefore procedures have been established for the
handling, first aid, dangers identification, storage, disposal,
spillage, and fire.
Procedure: The physical plant will be inspected annually by the Chief Engineer and
Stockton Fire Department for the presence of materials, which may be
suspected as hazardous. Also see Hazardous Material Management
Plan.
Suspect materials will be identified, if hazardous, using the EPA
guidelines and regulations.
MSDS sheets for each identified hazardous material will be located in a
binder in the Maintenance Department break room as well as in a master
file in the Materials Management Office.
All hazardous materials will be handled, identified, stored, and disposed of
in accordance with information contained in the MSDS for each material.
Hazardous materials being held on site for disposal will be stored in
properly labeled containers with the accumulation start dates. Materials
may not be stored for more than 90 days. Containers used to transport
hazardous materials from the building to the holding site shall be properly
labeled. All containers with liquid waste will be kept in secondary
containment.
In-service training for maintenance personnel will be given. Particular
emphasis will be placed upon the proper handling techniques, first aid
measures, proper safety attire, and fire extinguishing methods.
Furthermore, in-service training will include procedures for cleanup and
disposal of the material in the event of a spill or leak.
Annually the Medical Center will certify to the County Office of Emergency
Services that the Hazardous Materials Management Plan is accurate.
..
ICLICYWAZMAT.PCD 1
