Policy <br /> All Hazardous Material and waste byproducts used and controlled by St. Joseph's <br /> Regional Health System will be procured, identified,handled, distributed and <br /> disposed of in accordance with all applicable regulatory standards and the Office <br /> of Emergency Services for the County of San Joaquin. <br /> 11. Purpose <br /> To ensure employee knowledge of hazardous materials within their work place <br /> and to provide a safe environment for healthcare workers,hazardous materials <br /> waste handlers and the general public. To establish uniform procedures to <br /> prevent contamination of the environment by hazardous materials. To maintain <br /> and preserve the environment by minimizing the amount of hazardous waste in <br /> the environment. <br /> III. Definitions <br /> Hazardous Materials and Waste- Material or mixture of materials which is <br /> toxic, corrosive, flammable, an irritant, a strong sanitizer, or which generates <br /> pressure through decomposition,heat or other means, if such a waste or mixture <br /> of wastes may cause substantial injury, serious illness or harm to humans, <br /> livestock or wildlife. <br /> • Solvents - Any material, other than water, that is used for bonding, dissolving <br /> or cleaning materials or products. <br /> • Combustibles - Any substance or material which is easily ignited at <br /> temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more. <br /> • Flammables - Any substance or material that burns with unusual rapidity. <br /> • Explosives - Any material or substance that has the capacity to burst forth <br /> with great disruptive force. <br /> • Poisonous - Any material or substance that can be harmful to humans if <br /> ingested or inhaled. <br /> 1 <br /> .F <br />
