S-07-1997 12-57PM FROM ENGEO INC 510 838 7d25 P. 3
DRAFT
the reported laboratory testing conducted to date,ENGEO does not anticipate that significant chemical
hazards will be encountered during the remedial activities. The safety plan will be maintained on site
during excavation and sampling activities- The site safety plan is provided as an attachment.
Soil Excavation
A track-mounted excavator will be used for soil removal. The fill material will be removed from the
former drainage pond and segregated to the extent feasible during excavation. If necessary, a screening
unit will be mobilized to separate concrete and other inert material from the fill The excavation will be
extended laterally and vertically based on field observations and vapor screenings. ENGEO anticipates
an excavation 12 to 18 feet in depth over an area of±1,800 ft2 to 2,400 ft?* The specific volume of soil
to be removed is not known. ENGEO estimates that I,000 to 1,500 cubic yards of soil will be
excavated.
Once physical observations and field screenings indicate the affected soils have been removed, discrete
soil samples will be recovered from the excavation base and sidewalls at approximate 20-foot lineal
intervals_ The specific location and depth of the confirmation samples will be determined in the field.
ENGEO estimates that 15 to I8 samples will be recovered from the excavation for laboratory analysis.
Composite soil samples, if required by Forward, Inc-, will also be recovered from the soil stockpile(s).
The specific number of stockpile samples and scope of laboratory profiling will be determined at the
discretion of Forward,Inc
The soil samples will be recovered in 2-inch-diameter 6-inch-long stainless steel tubes sealed with
Teflon plastic end caps and tape- The samples will then be labeled and placed in a cooled ice chest
prior to transportation to the analytical laboratory.
Laboratory Analysis
The proposed selection of laboratory analysis is based on previous laboratory data compiled for the
site. The excavation samples will be tested for total volatile and extractable hydrocarbons(EPA 8015),
BTEX(EPA 8020), and volatile organic compounds(EPA 8240)Laboratory services will be provided
by American Environmental Network(AEN)in Pleasant Hill,California(DOHS#1172)
Report Preparation
A soil remediation report will be prepared which will summarize field and laboratory data, along with
documentation regarding the off-site disposal of the fill material. The report will also provide
recommendations for further characterization and/or remediation, if necessary. The report will be
prepared and signed by a State of California Certified Hydrogeologist.
We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide this work plan. If you have any questions regarding
the proposed scope of the field or laboratory services, please contact our office.
Very truly yours,
