C
To improve the performance of his product, the foam producer
will lower the water content to reduce the undesirable urea groups
and hydrogen bonds. The resultant softening of the urethane polymer
is counteracted by the reinforcing action.
•The product that has been accepted as a standard today has a
density of 3.25 to 3.50 pounds per cubic foot and uses barytes as the
reinforcing medium. This product has been in extensive commercial
use for over four years with an outstanding trouble free record of
performance.
The use of barytes to obtain the relatively high density of 3.25
pounds per cubic foot is also of advantage in persuading furniture
buyers that a superior cushion is being used. The inadequate per-
formance of some low density urethanes has strengthened the belief
that weight equals quality.
I hope the phases of 'The Technology of Urethane Foams" we have
examined this afternoon will help you answer the questions, "What
kind of foam, What are the differences, and How can we be sure,"
that concerned us at the beginning of this talk.
You can appreciate the costly and complicated testing equipment
required to perform all measurements. To this must be added the
cost of technically trained operators. There are few furniture manu-
facturers sizeable enough to justify this expense. Even the essential
measurement of ILD can be justified by only a few manufacturers.
With the availability of competent and knowledgeable producers, the
justification is even more difficult.
The knowledgeable producers welcome the opportunity to meet the
` demands of uniformity. Your discussions with him and demands upon
him will assure you quality. His control of the major properties of
density, 25% ILD, Compression Modulus and Hysteresis will assure
uniformity.
The trend toward higher density urethane foams will assure the
continued use of urethane foam and the continued growth of the
foam industry.
M.
