III. Universal Waste Management
a. Labeling
i. Universal waste storage areas must be labeled as such. This can be
as simple as hanging a sign on the door that says "Universal Waste
Storage Area".
ii. Universal waste streams must be labeled as "Universal Waste"
with the appropriate type of waste. For example, "Universal Waste
- Batteries",or "Universal Waste -Lamps".
iii. The label must also include the accumulation start date, that is, the
date that the first item was put into the container.
iv. Proper labeling is important so that first responders can identify all
possible waste streams that they may encounter.
b. Accumulation Time
i. All universal waste streams may be accumulated on site for up to
one year (365 days) from the date that the first item was generated
and/or collected.
c. Handling
i. All universal wastes must be handled to prevent damage or
breakage.
ii. Universal waste must be stored in containers compatible with the
contents of the container.
iii. All universal waste containers must be kept closed except when
actively adding wastes.
iv. Some special handling procedures:
1. When handling universal waste remember:
a. CRT glass is thick and sharp,so be extra careful when
r handling it. Use leather gloves to pick up broken
!! LA glass. Know where the closest first aid kit is located.
1 b. Eye and hand protection should be worn at all times
APR 2 4 2 when handling CRT's.
c. Some universal waste, especially E-Waste and CRT's
CNVRONMNTAI can be heavy. Remember to lift with your legs and not
with your back! Keep you back straight and knees
bent, face the load before lifting and carry it between
your waist and shoulders. If it is heavy, ask for help!
d. Responding to a Universal Waste Release
a. Contact your Manager/Supervisor as soon as possible.
i. When responding to a release such as a broken lamp, safety is the
most important consideration.
ii. Clean up and contain the release (for example,by placing into a
plastic bag or puncture resistant container).
iii. Manage other materials generated in the clean up appropriately.
iv. Special safety &spill guidelines:
