If the equipment involved has additional internal energy <br /> isolation devices or switches , they should also be turned <br /> off before proceeding with maintenance or servicing . <br /> f . If an equipment or, energy isolation device is to be <br /> replaced , the replacement unit must be capable of being <br /> locked out . Similarly , new equipment and energy <br /> isolation devices must be lockable . <br /> g . The lockout and tagout devices used for controlling <br /> energy sources must not be used for any other purpose and <br /> must be : <br /> * Durable and not deteriorate due to exposure to <br /> weather , corrosive environment or length of time <br /> being used . <br /> * Standardized within our regional area or District . <br /> Tags are to be of standard material make up , size , <br /> color scheme , message and print . <br /> * Substantial . The locks used should be large enough <br /> to prevent easy removal . The tags and the means by <br /> which they are attached must be strong enough to <br /> prevent accidental tear off or removal . <br /> * Identifiable . The locks or tags must bear the <br /> identity of the contractor or employee using it . <br /> h . Before the lockout or tagout devices are removed and <br /> energy restored to the equipment , ensure that all <br /> employees have been safely positioned or removed away <br /> from the equipment . <br /> i . Each lock or tag affixed to an energy isolating device <br /> must be removed only by the contractor or employee who <br /> originally installed it . If this contractor or employee <br /> is not available and the lock or tag has to be removed , <br /> then the following procedure must be followed : <br /> * Make all reasonable efforts to contact the <br /> contractor or employee who installed the lock or <br /> tag . <br /> * Ensure that this contractor/employee is aware that <br /> the lock or tact has been removed before he/she <br /> resumes work at the facility . <br /> j . When several contractors need to isolate an energy source <br /> from specific equipment , they must inform the facility ' s <br /> manager or dealer of this fact .
