0 • <br /> SAFE WORK PRACTICES FOR CONTRACTORS WORKING AT RETAIL PETROLEUM/CONVENIENCE FACILITIES 17 <br /> 5.9 HEAVY TRAFFIC AND PEDESTRIANS PATTERNS TO AND FROM INSIDE STORE <br /> Workers shall be aware of pathways at sites where there will be heavy foot traffic as customers make their way to and from vari- <br /> ous offerings at the facility. The most heavily walked zone will likely be between the fueling portion of the site and the building. <br /> In addition,pedestrians maybe distracted as they walk back to their vehicles(counting change,carrying items,etc).Workers shall <br /> be alert and use extreme caution when operating a motor vehicle in these areas in order to safeguard the general public. <br /> 5.10 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT <br /> Wear personal protective equipment(PPE)when required and when necessary to protect against specific hazards: <br /> • High visibility vest are required to be worn when out of the vehicle near moving traffic,or if changing a tire on the side of <br /> the road. <br /> • Safety glasses are required to be worn when checking fluid levels and when dust may blow into eyes/face. <br /> 5.11 ACCIDENT REPORTING AND PROCEDURES <br /> All incidents involving personal injury or property damage,or which have the potential to cause significant injury or damage, <br /> shall be promptly reported to site management(if accident on-site),and to the workers'customer contact and employer.All infor- <br /> mation and assistance shall be made available upon request to assist with an incident investigation. <br /> 5.12 DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS <br /> It is the employer's responsibility to assure that workers driving vehicles are aware of all applicable Department of Transportation <br /> (DOT)requirements that may apply to their vehicles.This includes but is not limited to: <br /> • Vehicle is fit for intended purpose,and is maintained in safe working order,with functional seatbelts. <br /> • Number of passengers does not exceed the specification for the vehicle. <br /> • Frequent inspections shall be conducted on all vehicles(see Appendix A.1 for sample inspection sheets). <br /> • Loads are secure and do not exceed specified and legal load limits for the vehicle. <br /> • Loads in pickup,flat-bed truck,and on trailer shall be physically secured(ropes,clamps,etc)to the vehicle. <br /> • Loads that extend beyond the vehicle edge shall be appropriately flagged and lighted, at night,to warn other drivers and <br /> pedestrians. <br /> • Trailer,if used,shall be securely connected to the vehicle and lights and other safety equipment shall function properly. <br /> • Proper documentation for"permit loads." <br /> 6 Hazard Communication <br /> Minimum Required Knowledge <br /> 6.1 REQUIREMENTS RELATED TO"EMPLOYEE RIGHT-TO-KNOW" <br /> The Hazard Communication(Hazcom)OSHA standard(29 CFR 1910.1200)covers the use of hazardous materials in the work- <br /> place,including the requirement for providing MSDSs and employee training.The purpose of Hazoom is to ensure that the haz- <br /> ards of all workplace chemicals are evaluated,and that hazard information is communicated to employees.This might include, <br /> but is not limited to:gasoline,diesel,pipe adhesives,pipe dope,cleaning liquids,refrigerants(e.g.,FreonTM),and lubricants.This <br /> communication is to be accomplished by a comprehensive hazard communication program,which is to include making material <br /> safety data sheets(MSDS),container labeling and other forms of warnings,and training available to employees.This applies to <br /> any chemical that is present in the workplace that employees may be exposed to under normal conditions of use or in a foresee- <br /> able emergency. <br /> 6.2 HAZARD DETERMINATION AND MITIGATION <br /> Hazard determination is performed by the manufacturer or importer of the hazardous material based on an evaluation as required <br /> by various regulations and includes physical hazards(for example:flammable,corrosive,reactive)and health hazards(for exam- <br /> ple:irritant,narcotic,sensitizer,carcinogen). <br />
