•
Mr. Ron Rowe CAMBRIA
July 16, 1997
New Tank Vault Sampling: A new tank pit was excavated at the northeast corner of the site to install two
new double-walled fiberglass tanks. Approximable 400 cubic yards of soil removed from this excavation
was sampled and analyzed for petroleum hydrocarbons and lead. Based on the results of the analysis,-Ran
e authorized the use of this soil as backfill for the former UST excavafioKi.
Sample Analyses: Sequoia Analytical of Walnut Creek,California analyzed the samples for total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) by modified EPA Method 8015; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and
xylenes(BTEX),and methyl-tert-butyl-ether(MTBE)by EPA Method 8020; and total lead by EPA Method
7420/7421 as required by Mr.McClullen and Mr. Rowe.
Waste Disposal/Recycling: Crosby&Overton of Oakland,California arranged for the disposal of the tank
rinsate at the Shell refinery in Martinez,California. The tanks were recycled at Erickson, hie. of Richmond,
California.
ANALYTIC RESULTS
Former Tank Pit: Petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in the samples collected from beneath the tanks.
The maximum concentrations detected were 1,300 parts per million (ppm) TPHg, 0.055 ppm benzene,
12 ppm MTBE,and 7.2 ppm total lead in a sample collected at a depth of 13 ft beneath the east end of tank
T-4. This area was overexcavated to a depth of 25 ft,where a sample contained less than 5 ppm of TPHg.
Dispensers and Product Piping: Samples were collected from beneath each of the four former dispensers
at the site. Only one sample contained detectable amounts of TPHg(D-2,4.5 ft, 1,200 ppm). No TPHg was
detected after overexcavating to 9.5 ft from this location. No BTEX or total lead were detected in samples
from beneath the dispensers, and MTBE was detected in only one sample(P-1,4.5 ft) at a concentration of
0.22 ppm.
Maximum concentrations of 3.1 ppm TPHg,0.028 ppm benzene, and 34 ppm MTBE were detected in the
samples collected from beneath the product piping and vent lines, with most of the samples containing no
TPHg,BTEX,or MTBE. No total lead was detected in any of these samples.
New Tank Vault and Former Tank Backfill: The soil removed from the former UST excavation was
stockpiled and sampled. No total lead was detected in the four soil stockpile samples. Maximum
concentrations of 190 ppm TPHg, 0.21 ppm benzene, and 2.6 ppm MTBE were detected in the samples.
ptutiilz]'ifILRI! backfill in the former tank pits
