3. 2. 2 Electrical Hazards (continued)
private locator services will also be contacted to identify
underground utility lines. Underground electrical utilities will
be located before excavation begins.
3. 2. 3 Heat Stress
Heat Stress may be caused by the combination of elevated ambient
temperatures and wearing of PPE. The effects of heat stress are
heat rash, cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke. If these
conditions exist, workers heart rates will be monitored in
accordance with the guidelines published by NIOSH/OSHA/USCG/EPA
Occupational Safety and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous
Waste Site Activities , 1985. Cool water or fluids will be readily
available to the employees, who will be encouraged to drink
frequently during each break.
3. 2. 4 Cold Exposure
It is not expected that cold exposure will be experienced at this
site. However, all persons working outdoors should be aware that
they could be exposed to rapid body temperature cooling in the
presence of winds. This is particularly a threat to the
hazardous waste site worker if the body cools suddenly when
chemical-protective equipment is removed and the clothing
underneath is perspiration soaked. The presence of wind greatly
increases the rate of cooling.
3. 2. 5 Confined Spaces/Oxygen Deficiency/Explosive Atmospheres
If confined spaces as defined by Cal-OSHA regulations are
encountered, the SSO will be notified. Entry will only be made
in accordance with the confined entry procedures of STOKLEY
CONSTRUCTION HEALTH AND SAFETY MANUAL and Cal-OSHA regulations.
3. 2. 6 Illumination
A variety of injuries may be caused by a lack of illumination at
a site. It will be necessary to illuminate the site area if work
occurs in the dark. The SSO will determine the acceptable
illumination intensity levels for different work activities and
for the decontamination areas . It is not expected that work
will continue past daylight hours. As with other hazards, at no
time will Job task completion have greater priority than personal
safety.
