The lateral <br /> limit of hydrocarbon migration appears to be limited. <br /> 5.0 Soil Remediation Proposal <br /> 5.1 Tank Removal Activities <br /> IT Corporation was retained by BP Oil Company to generate a Soil Remediation Plan and <br /> provide environmental support during the removal/replacement of four underground storage <br /> tanks at BP Station No. 11190. The construction activities will be executed by <br /> representatives of Paradiso. Construction, as agents of BP Oil, and are planned to begin <br /> sometime in early fall 1991. During construction, the tanks, dispensers, associated piping and <br /> all imported fill material (surrounding the tanks) will be excavated. Detailed tank removal <br /> procedures will be addressed under separate cover. <br /> Daring excavation procedures, IT field personnel will screen the removed soils for the <br /> presence of volatile organic compounds using a photoionization detector. Excavated soils will <br /> be stockpiled on sheets of visqueen pending waste characterization. Soil disposal is discussed <br /> in Section 5.3. <br /> 5.2 Soil sampling <br /> As established by the Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Initial Evaluation and <br /> Investigation of Underground Tanks, two native soil samples will be collected from beneath <br /> tanks with volumes of 1,000 to 10,000 gallons (tanks 2, 3 and S). Three native soil samples <br /> will collected from beneath tanks with volumes greater than 10,000 gallons (tank 1). <br /> Additionally, one soil sample will be collected from beneath every twenty lineal feet of <br /> associated piping. Soil samples will be collected from the excavation following removal of <br /> the fill material. The soil samples will be collected using a decontaminated brass sleeve <br /> inserted in a split spoon sampler. The sampler will be driven into the native soils using an <br /> attached slide hammer. In the event that sampling locations cannot be reached safely from <br /> outside the excavation, a backhoe will be used to bring soil to the ground surface for <br /> sampling. The outer two inches of disturbed soil will be removed and the sampler will be <br /> driven into the soil in the backhoe bucket. <br /> MA/8-12-91/P.Nc/9280BR 5 <br />
