3.2 Chemical Hazard
The chemicals of primary concern include Petroleum Hydrocarbons. Exposure to the
compounds listed above may occur through skin absorption, skin contact irritation,
possible ingestion and inhalation of volatiles.
' Exposure symptoms are potentially extremely variable due to the variety of compounds
' present. Symptoms may include nausea, headache, abdominal pain, twitching, weakness,
slurred speech and vomiting. It is expected that dust control measures, personal
protective equipment and employee work practices will adequately control potential
' exposures to the materials present at the site.
' 4.0 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND ZONE DELINEATION
' 4.1 Levels of Protection
Site activities are expected to be conducted using modified Level D personal protective
' equipment (PPE). Upgrading or downgrading the level of protection will be based on
real time working conditions. Changes in the level of protection will be the responsibility
of the HSO in consultation with the FS.
' 4.2 Respiratory Protection
' If air purifying cartridge respirators are necessary an appropriate cartridge for use with the
known hazardous materials and corresponding concentrations will be selected by the
' HSO. Change over frequency will be based on containment concentrations, exposure
duration, breathing resistance, odor breakthrough, if any, and the chemical warning
properties. A cartridge will not be used for more than eight hours. The decision for using
respiratory protection will be made by the HSO and based on the action levels provided
in Table 5-3. Types of respiratory protection equipment and the level of protection are
provided in Table 4-2.
4.3 Care and Cleaning of Personal Protection Equipment
Provisions for the care and cleaning of personal protective equipment (respiratory
protection) are found in the KROEKER Respiratory Protection Program included as
Attachment F. Responsibility for compliance with these provisions are with the FS.
1
10
