Monitoring Alternative 2
Implementation of this Monitoring Alternative shall require
Vadose Zone Monitoring, Ground Water Monitoring, and Soil
Testing. If this monitoring alternative is chosen,
implementation should be carried out as follows:
1) Undisturbed soil samples shall be taken from all exploratory
borings drilled for the purpose of installing either Vadose
Zone or Ground Water Monitoring Wells. The boring/borings
performed for installation of the vadose zone monitoring
wells should be drilled to a depth such that the base of the
boring is located above the perennial high ground water
level. Proposed locations for such borings are shown on the
attached site plan.
2) Borings performed for the purpose of installing ground water
monitoring wells shall be drilled to a depth such that the
base of the boring is a minimum of 20 feet below the level of
the perennial ground water table or 15 feet below the base of
the tank/tanks (whichever is lowest). The borings shall be
located along the perimeter of the tank cluster as shown on
the attached site sketch, or the boring shall be located as
close as possible to the tank as shown on the site sketch
attached to the end of this package.
3) Soil samples shall be taken from all borings at 5 foot
intervals, in the zone above the water table. Samples should
be taken from the base of all borings terminated above the
water table. All samples shall be properly sealed, labeled,
and preserved until they are delivered to a location where
they can be analyzed to determine the presence of any
possibly hazardous substances. Soil sampling and testing
shall be carried out as specified in Section 2645 of the
Underground Storage Tank Regulations.
4) If the soil samples obtained are determined to be free of
hazardous material both the Vadose Zone and the ground water
monitoring wells shall be installed and monitored as
specified in Sections 2646, 2647, and 2648 of the Underground
Storage Tank Regulations. Ground water testing shall be
performed semi-annually at a minimum. Frequency of Vadose
Zone monitoring will depend on the monitoring equipment being
used. If the vadose zone is being monitored by a vapor
detection system, testing shall be performed daily at a
minimum. If the vadose zone is being monitored by other type
of detection system, such as soil -pore liquid monitoring,
testing shall be performed weekly at a minimum.
