below the removed pipeline (Sample P1 through P7). One soil sample was obtained from
below the former location of the dispenser(Sample D1). Two soil samples were obtained
from the soil stockpile (Samples 1A and 2A). The soil in the area of sample P7 had an oil
odor. Laboratory analysis of the soil sample confirmed that the contaminant was motor
oil.
The area of soil sample P-7 was excavated on October 15, 1997. Approximately 10 tons
of soil were excavated. Two confirmation soil samples were obtained from the
excavation the same day. Soil samples were obtained at a depth of 8 feet (Sample P7-8')
and 10.5 feet (Sample P7-10.5').
All twenty three soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH)
diesel in accordance with the DHS LUFT extractable method (EPA method 8015B) and
Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene, and Xylene (BTE&X) in accordance with EPA
method 8020.
Three soil samples from below pipeline and two samples from the excavation of the area
below Sample P7 analyzed for oil range hydrocarbons (C18+) in accordance the DHS
LUFT extractable method (Samples P5, P6, P7, P7-8', and P7-10.5'). The two samples
from the over-excavation below the removed pipeline, Samples P7-8', and P7-10.5', were
also analyzed for gasoline range hydrocarbons.
The results of the laboratory analysis are summarized in the attached table.
The UGT excavation was backfilled and compacted with clean imported fill and the soil
stockpiles. Clean imported fill, to make up the volume of the removed tank, was placed in the
bottom of the excavation. The eastern stockpile (Samples SP1 through SP4) was then emplaced
above the clean imported fill. The western stockpile (Samples SP5 through SPS) was then
placed in the excavation. The stockpiles of soil removed from the pipeline trench and excavation
of pipeline sample P7 was emplaced in the upper portion of the excavation.
Clean imported fill was backfilled and compacted in the area of pipeline sample D7 and the
former pipeline trench.
The remaining UGT was retrofitted with double walled pipelines and spill containment to current
regulatory standards. The entire area, including the former UGT and pipeline area was then
resurfaced with concrete to match the existing surface.
CONCLUSIONS
TPH-diesel and BTE&X were not detected in soil samples from below the removed UGT
(Samples TS-1, TS-2, and TS-3). These results indicate that the diesel contamination from
overspill was limited to the backfill material immediately above the removed UGT.
TPH-diesel was not detected to 33 mg/kg and BTE&X were non-detected in the soil samples
below the former dispenser (Sample D1) and six of the seven soil samples below the pipeline
1990 PICCOLI ROAD, STOCKTON CLOSURE
PAGE 2
