- r
OVEREXCAVATION AND SOIL STOCKPILE SAMPLING# REPORT
Pacific Plumbing and Heating
1044 South Aurora Street
Stockton, California
1. 0 INTRODUCTION
In accordance with a request from our client, Mr. Harry Shuler, Jr.
of Pacific Plumbing and Heating, Geological Audit Services, Inc.
(GeoAudit) has prepared this report summarizing the excavation and
sampling of soil from a former underground storage tank cavity at
1044 South Aurora Street, Stockton, California (the site) .
2 . 0 BACKGROUND
The site is located in a flat, industrial area of Stockton (Figure
1) . The site is- owned and occupied by Pacific Plumbing and Heating
(Figure 2) .
On 2 December 1992 , one 550-gallon leaded gasoline tank and the
associated pumps and piping were removed from the site by Falcon
Energy Associates (FEA) . A geologist from GeoAudit collected one
soil sample from beneath the tank and two samples from the
stockpiled soil. The samples were analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH as gasoline, EPA 8015m) , volatile aromatics
(BTE&X, EPA 8020) , EDB (EPA 8011m) and total lead (EPA 7421) .
The sample collected from under the tank contained TPH as gasoline
at a concentration of 880 ppm. Volatile aromatics were detected at
0. 60, 3 . 5, 11 and 100 ppm for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and
total xylenes respectively. Total lead was detected at a
concentration of 8 .4 ppm, while EDB was below detection limits.
Subsequently, FEA received approval to enlarge the excavation to
approximately 20 X 12 feet and deepen it to a depth of
approximately 24 feet. This soil was added to the existing
stockpile next to the excavation. A total of approximately 200
yards of contaminated soil was removed. After excavation was
completed, GeoAudit was retained to collect soil samples.
3.0 PROCEDURES
On 16 July 1993 , an excavator was utilized to collect soil samples
from the excavation. At the direction of Mr. Michael Infurna of the
San Joaquin County Public Health Services/Environmental Health
Division (PHS/EHD) , four samples were collected from the side walls
and one sample from the bottom of the excavation using the
excavator bucket. At the direction of Mr. Infurna, eight samples
were also collected from the soil stockpile.
1
