This well
survey was requested by PHSIEHD in written communication dated July 13, 1998. Please have
the well survey completed and provided to PHSIEHD prior to the submittal of any permits for field
work.
f The work plan proposes the advancement of six soil borings to be converted to monitoring wells.
Historically, ground water levels in drought years in the vicinity of the site have been known to be
approximately 70 feet below surface grade(bsg). Therefore, in order to investigate the vertical
extent of the contamination, the initial boring in each former tanks pit area needs to be at least to
this depth. Please note that the work plan labeled these borings'MW-2'and MW-5, but they will be
the first two borings, and wells, completed. Field observations and Pt-readings from these.
borings will direct the depth to which the subsequent borings will, need to be advanced.
Soil samples will be collected from each boring at five foot intervals beginning at five feet bsg, and
continuing to the final depth of the bore hole. As per the workplan, the'soil samples selected to
undergo analysis will be selected in an effort to best characterize the distribution of hydrocarbon
contamination vertically through the soil column. Soil samples shall be analyzed for total
petroleum hydrocarbons as gas (TPHg) and diesel (TPHd) by EPA method 8015; benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) by EPA method 8020and oxygenates by EPA method
8260.
The work plan proposes that all six monitoring wells be constructed to 55 feet bsg, with screen
intervals between 35 and 55 feet bsg. Based on review of the boring logs of the nine geoprobe's
advanced on August 18, 19 and 20, 1997 and the cross sections of the site prepared by
AquaGeosciences, it is the recommendation of PHSIEHD that MW-2 and MW-5, those in the .
former tank pit areas, be completed as dual wells. The purpose"af the dual wells is to provide
water samples from specific[ithologic units. One of the well casings in each of the dual wells
shall be screened from 25 to 40 feet bsg., above the sand lens which was reported at 40 feet bsg
in each of the August, 1997 borings. The placement of the second well:screen shall be
A Division of San Joaquin Counry Health Carc Services
