Valley Water Treatment Page 3
Corrective Action Plan
GPE Project No,480.3
December 12,2006
If a soil vapor extraction system were constructed, the existing MW-1 could
be used as an extraction well. Costs would include two, 1,000-pound carbon'
filters, at the surface equipment, and system monitoring on a twice a week
schedule. Assuming the systems were installed and-operated for'one year,
and that -no changes of carbon were needed, the following table summarizes
the major anticipated costs:
Item Unit Cost Units= Total
Cost
System Design & Plan $4,000 1 $4,100
Surface Equipment $5,000 1
$5,000
Carbon and Canisters $4,000 . 2',' $8,000 -
Air Permitting $1,500 1 $1,500
System Operation i $2,5001Mo 12' $30,000
TOTAL $48,500J
Soil Vapor Extraction with Air Sparging
In cases where the contaminant mass extends, below the water table,
sparging of air or other oxygenating gasses below the groundwater surface is
usually helpful in expediting the removal of the contaminant mass as
compared to vapor extraction alone. It clearly is even more, expensive than
simple vapor extraction, however, and is therefore unlikely to be cost-
competitive with excavation.
E Excavation
In general, excavation has the virtue of rapidly removing contaminant mass
from the subsurface environment, but it. is frequently not an attractive
remedial alternative due to the high expense. In this case however, the very
limited volume of impacted soil in conjunction with the.shallow depth mean
that a very small excavation can have a profound effect in removing the bulk
of the contaminant mass. We estimate that a total excavation of 30 to 50
cubic yards of soil will achieve the desired effect, .and will cost about $17,000.
Evaluation
Comparison of the virtues of the various alternatives described above;
suggest that a limited excavation offers the best method of mitigating this
release.
4.0 SCOPE OF WORK
The following tasks will be completed to accomplish the goals of this Work
Plan:
2937 Veneman Ave.,#B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
