The results of soil and groundwater samples collected from the
excavations during the tank removal indicated the existence of petroleum
hydrocarbon contamination in the soil and groundwater. The highest level of
contamination based on the analytical results was found at the excavation of
former UST 2, 4, and 5 cluster. Soil samples taken from the side wails of the
excavation revealed contaminant concentrations as high as 12,000 parts per
billion (ppb) benzene, 30,000 ppb toluene, 29,000 ppb ethylbenzene, 120,000
ppb xylene, and 4,100,000 ppb total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-
g). Petroleum contamination was also found at the excavation of former UST 1
and 6 cluster, where the water sample revealed 300 ppb benzene. No
detectable amount of hydrocarbon contamination was found in the excavation of
former UST 3. None of the samples had been tested for oxygenate compounds.
The work plan proposes five soil borings and installation of three monitoring
wells (see attached map). PHSIEHD has the following comments:
i) Install additional monitoring wells north and northeast of the former UST 2, 4,
and 5 cluster. Other site investigations have shown that generally
groundwater flow direction in Tracy is northerly. Therefore, monitoring wells
should be installed north of the contamination.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
