Doug Wilson
September 27, 1996
Page 2
SODIUM CHLORITE RELEASES: 8590 WEST LANE AT MOSHER SLOUGH AND 8603
THORNTON nQAri AT DAVIS ROAD
contained within the resultant seventeen (17) 55 gallon drums. Subsequent to this event, Don Light of
Del-Tech, has removed the drums and transported them to Forward, Inc. We will forward
documentation of proper disposal of this material to you upon our receipt of Forward's documentation.
8603 Thomton Road at Davis Road
The nature of this release was apparently due to a coupling vibrating loose, from the inlet piping to the
sanitary sewer, resulting in the spillage of approximately 40 gallons of sodium chlorite onto the
ground.
The release was discovered on Monday, September 9, 1996 by MUD staff making regular inspection
rounds. PHS-EHD was notified of the release at approximately 1:10 p.m. followed by a facsimiled
map of the facility.
Our chemical service contractor, Vulcan, responded to the environmental response and cleaned up the
spill, placing the excavated soil into two (2) overpack drums. Mr. Michael Kith was present during
the initial soil testing to verify that the pH was within nonhazardous levels (<10 pH). Based upon Mr.
Kith , the soil was to be transported to Forward, Inc. by Del-Tech.
Conclusion and Recommendarinn
We are reevaluating the current method of storage of sodium chlorite for greater environmental
protection, and have instituted some immediate measures to provide weekend and holiday visual
inspections of our sanitary pumping station sites to provide safeguards and early detection to possible
leaks.
If you have any questions regarding this report, or need any additional information, please feel free
to contact me or Regulatory Compliance Officer Diane Hinson.
MORRIS L.
