(AGE). The Workplan
proposes to investigate the source of the Methyl Tert-butyl Ether(MtBE) spikes in groundwater monitoring well
MW-8A. The Workplan states analysis of MW-8A, screened 40 to 50 feet below ground surface (bgs) in a
medium sand,reported MtBE from March 2002 (700 µg/L)through September 2003 (290 gg/L). Prior to March
2002, seven quarters of groundwater analysis of MW-8A did not detect MtBE(<0.5 µg/L). Groundwater
analysis of deeper aquifer zones, at MW-813 (95-105 feet bgs) and MW-8C (130-150 feet bgs),have not detected
MtBE. The Workplan proposes drilling five additional soil borings and collect discreet grab groundwater
samples at 20, 30,40,and 50 feet bgs. Four of the soil borings are located onsite around MW-8A, and one boring
is located offsite on Banner Avenue. Depth to water is 10 feet.
I concur with the Workplan with the following conditions. Figure 3,the cross-section, shows that two clay/fine
sand contacts occur at 12 feet and 22 feet bgs. Please take grab groundwater samples in the zones with higher
porosity(sands), or provide the rationale why taking grab groundwater samples in the clay intervals would be
useful in the investigation. Include a grab groundwater sample in the sand at the water table (approximately
12 feet bgs). If there is field evidence of groundwater contamination at the Banner Avenue boring location,
install a monitoring well per prior approved workplan(s).
Please apply for required permits from San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department(SJCEHD) and
provide at least 72 hours prior notice, so that SJCEHD and I may be present for the fieldwork.
