S-00-700
I reviewed the 13 July 2001 Quarterly Report—Second Quarter 2001 (QMR) submitted by Advanced
GeoEnvironmental,Incorporated(AGE) for the Flag City Chevron site. The QMR documents decreasing trends
of MtBE contamination in on-site monitoring and extraction wells due to continued groundwater extraction and
treatment. Concentrations of MtBE in on-site monitoring well MW-1 have decreased from a maximum of
5,700 micrograms per liter(µg/l)in June 2000 to 15 µg/1 in June 2001, and the current maximum MtBE
concentration from extraction wells EW-2 through EW-10 is 140 µg/1.
The on-site remediation system does not appear to be affecting off-site and deeper groundwater contamination,
as observed in monitoring wells MW-11A and MW-11B. Monitoring well MW-11A, screened from 40-50 feet
shows MtBE at 4.3 µg/1 in June 2001 (a decrease from 210 µg/1 in March 2001), and MW-1113, screened from
65-75 feet shows MtBE at 190 µg/1 in June 2001. From June 2000 to June 2001,MtBE concentrations have
fluctuated between 4.3 and 810 pg/I in MW-11A, and between 190 and 310 gg/I in MW-1113.
MW-11A,B, C,and D were installed to monitor contaminant concentrations in shallow and deep water bearing
zones within close proximity of Rocky's Restaurant domestic well (RDW-1). RDW-1 is screened at 67-76 feet,
87-104 feet, and 130-142 feet, and reportedly gravel-packed from 50 to 150 feet. This extensive gravel pack and
multiple screen intervals provide a vertical conduit for groundwater contaminants to migrate unimpeded from
shallow to deep water bearing zones. Groundwater sampling data from MW-1 IA and MW-I 113 shows that the
MtBE identified in RDW-1 is a result of shallow MtBE-impacted groundwater intersecting the gravel pack
and/or first screen interval of RDW-1, and mixing with deeper water. This downward migration of
contaminated groundwater through RDW-1 may exacerbate the MtBE pollution in this area resulting in
increased corrective action costs and complexity of cleanup.
Our goal is to clean up existing groundwater contamination, and prevent further contamination of high quality
groundwater in deeper aquifers. This can only be achieved by properly destroying RDW-1,and eliminating the
vertical conduit between the shallow and deep aquifers. As discussed in a meeting at our office on 5 June 2001,
we requested that the RDW-I be properly destroyed by 31 December 2001.
