The QMR presents the following summary
for monitoring and sampling activities during the months of April, May, and Jime 2000:
• The groundwater flow direction was highly variable, ranging from north to southeast.
• Maximum concentrations of MtBE in monitoring well MW-1 have increased from 2,100 µg11 in
the First Quarter 2000 to 5,700 µg/1 in the Second Quarter 2000. TPHg and BTEX constituents
in MW-1 are non-detect at<50 and<0.5, respectively.
• Ethanol concentrations in new multi-level monitoring wells MW-8 through MW-13 have
decreased considerably. This provides additional information to suggest that ethanol was
introduced into the well via the.bentonite pellets used during well construction.
• Approximately 141,900 gallons of groundwater were extracted from EX-1 and transported off-
site for treatment.
Groundwater flow directions at this site have been variable since initial groundwater investigations were
started. Groundwater is very shallow, and water levels are influenced by pumping from extraction well
EX-1, Rocky's Restaurant well, and Three B's well. Therefore, you must continue to collect monthly
water levels from all on-site and off-site monitoring and extraction wells. The groundwater flow
direction and gradient should be calculated from monitoring wells away from the influence of
groundwater extraction.
AGE recommended reducing the frequency of groundwater sampling from monthly to quarterly at all
monitoring wells. Monthly sampling was required, starting March 2000, in accordance with C&A, and
five months of consecutive data has been accumulated. Based on analysis of the constituent trends and
the added monitoring wells, monthly sampling is no longer needed. In our letter dated 16 August 2000,
C&A Order 96 was suspended, thereby changing the sampling requirement from monthly to quarterly.
)ie next sampling event must be completed in August 2000 corresponding to sampling at Three B's
'trick Plaza.
California Environmental Protection Agency
Qa Recycled Paper
