16 <br /> 5.2 Hazardous Samples <br /> Drum samples, tank samples, siudee sammes. and grossiv coma.=ted Soil <br /> samotes will be shippea as DOT Hazardous Materials. The designanon <br /> "Flammanle liquid" or "Flammaoie Solid" will be used. The samples will be <br /> transported as follows: <br /> I. Collect sample in a 16 ounce or smaller glass or polyethylene container with <br />' nonmetallic teflon-lined screw cap. Allow sufficient air space (approximateiv <br /> 1091c by volume) so container is not liquid full at 540C (130 °F). If collecting <br /> a solid material, the container plus contents should not exceed 1 pound net <br />' weight. if sampling for voiaule organic analysis, 0 VOA container to septum <br /> but place the VOA container inside a 16 ounce or smaller container so the <br /> required air space may be provided. large quantities. up to 3.786 liters (I <br /> gallon), may be collected if the sample's flash point is 23 °C (75 'OF) or higher. <br /> In this case, the flash point must be marked on the outside container (e.g., <br /> canon, cooler), and shipping papers should state that "Flash point is 73 OF or <br /> higher." <br /> 3 ? Seal sample and place in a 4 mil thick polyethylene bag, one sample per bag. <br /> 3. Place sealed bag inside a metal can with noncombustible, absorbent <br /> cushioning material (e.g., verrmculite or earth) to prevent breakage, one bag <br /> per can. Pressure-close the can and use clips, tape or other positive means to <br /> hold the lid securely. <br /> 4. Mark the can with: <br /> Name and address of originator <br /> "Flammable liquid N.O.S. UN 1993" <br /> (or "Flammable Solid N O.S. UN 1325) <br /> NOTE. UN numbers are now required in proper shipping names. <br /> �. Place one or more metal cans in a strong outside container such as a picnic <br />' cooler or fiberboard box. Preservatives are not used for hazardous waste site <br /> samples. <br /> I� 6. Prepare for shipping: <br /> "Flammable Liquid, N.O.S. UN 1993" or "Flammable Solid. N.O.S. UN 1375", <br /> "Cargo Aircraft Only (if more than 1 quart net per outside package); "Limited <br /> ' Quantity" or "Ltd. Qty ", "Laboratory Samples", "Net Weight " or "Net <br /> Volume " (of hazardous contents) should be indicated on shipping papers <br /> and on outside of shipping container. 'Mis Side Up" or "Mis End Up" should <br /> ' also be on container. Sign shipper certification. <br /> 7 Stand by for possible carrier requests to open outside containers for <br /> inspection or modify packaging. it is wise to contact carrier before packing to <br /> ascertain local packaging requirements and not to leave area before the <br /> carrier vehicle (aircraft, truck) is on its way. <br /> ' Ets/SY=.01/00M <br /> 5-2 <br />
