The concentrations noted for groundwater are
for blended waters as tested in pilot testing programs.
Pond Water Performance
Pond water will be the first water to be treated in the summer of
1987. The pond water will be chemically treated to enhance liquid/
solids separation prior to liquid removal for treatment. This chemical
treatment may also reduce the concentration of suspended wood treating
chemicals in the liquid phase. Pond water treatment will be a
"one-time" operation. That is, once the pond is drained, no recurring
pond water treatment will be required. The theoretical performance of
the ion exchange process in treating pond water is presented in Table 2.
Groundwater Performance
Groundwater extraction and treatment will commence in the summer of
1987. Groundwater contaminant concentration varies inversely as a
function of distance from the sources of contamination. The bulk of the
groundwater to be treated will be extracted from near the southern
boundary of the South Yard. The concentration of hexavalent chromium in
the groundwater at this point is expected to be approximately 1 mg/l or
1 part per million (ppm) . Additional water extracted from more concen-
trated areas will be used to increase the influent concentration to
optimize operation.
2
