organic coagulant aide acts as a charge neutralization and bridging
device to allow the smaller particles to get closer with each other and
grow in size.
The flocculated water then flows into the Lamella Settler, through
specially designed feed distribution ducts. The slow moving,
flocculated water enters the individual lamella plates where
clarification of the process stream takes place. The floc particles
settle over a short distance, until they reach the settling surface
provided by each lamella plate. At this point the floc slides down the
plate to the sludge hopper for collection and discharge. The inlet flow
distribution arrangement prevents scouring and resuspension of the
settled sludge.
The clarified water flowing upward, is uniformly collected at each side
of each lamella plate. Submerged orifices ensure even collection and
prevent short-circuiting which can degrade effluent quality.
Collection of the floc in the sloped bottom hopper helps to compress the
water from the sludge. This compression effect produces a more
concentrated liquid sludge. A higher dry solids concentration
translates into lower blowdown volumes, and smaller sludge handling
systems.
The liquid sludge is automatically released from the Lamella Settler on
a periodic basis proportionate to the inlet flow. A manual backflush
valve is included for periodic cleaning of the blowdown line with
utility water to prevent sludge build up and blockage. The backflush
valve is also used to forward flush to the existing Sludge Drying Beds,
when necessary. The blowoff sequence is completely independent of
normal operation, so the system can continue to process untreated water
as required.
11654 2-2
VLS120588
