If it is found that the bottom material is not drying out quickly
enough to satisfy the regulatory deadlines, measures may be taken
to secure access of the drill rig. These measures may include
amending the bottom material with gravel or sorbent material, or
the laying of timbers across the surface of the material to
provide access.
Although the material is anticipated to "firm up" enough to
support the weight of the drill rig within the allotted schedule,
it should be noted that access to the bottom of the pond poses
the primary potential for delay of project. Neither GMI nor
Layne Environmental Services is able to guarantee access to the
sample locations on the pond bottom within the time scheduled for
completion of the project. If access appears to be a problem as
the project progresses, alternative drilling/sampling methods may
have to be considered.
Layne proposes to utilize a CME 750 all-terrain mounted hollow
stem auger rig for the intermediate and deep boring section of
the program. The borings will be made utilizing hollow stem
auger flight, 6-5/6" O.D. x 3-1/4" I .D. in diameter. Undisturbed
soil samples will be collected using a split spoon sample tool.
The split spoon samplers will be decontaminated between each
sample, and sections of hollow stem auger will be decontaminated
between each borehole.
