Vicki McCartney
From: Vicki McCartney
Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 4:32 PM
To: 'tcunningham@lancasterlabs.com'
Cc: Margaret Lagorio
Subject: Questions Concerning Diesel, Motor Oil, and Gasoline Analyses
Teresa,
As I mentioned during our telephone conversation today, I have a number of concerns about how Lancaster Laboratories,
Inc. (Lancaster) is reporting results for diesel and motor oil. My questions and concerns are summarized in this e-mail.
When I spoke to Bob Brown, chemist at Lancaster, on December 20, 2002, it was my understanding that Lancaster is
analyzing diesel and motor oil by EPA SW-846 method 80158. However, instead of analyzing a five-point curve for diesel,
and a five-point curve for motor oil, and quantitating the sample results based on the curves and fuel fingerprints,
Lancaster is analyzing a curve containing a mixture of standards that includes carbon 8 through carbon 40. Areas are
identified and response factors are generated by dividing the areas by the concentrations. The response factors are used
to generate the sample results.
Please let me know if I am correct in my assumptions and if these are correct, then has the State of California approved
this modification to method 8015B? Also, is gasoline being reported by this same procedure?
The telephone number for the State of California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation is 510.540.2800. You may want {
to check with someone there.
Also, I have had to deny the quarterly groundwater results in GeoTracker because there are no results for motor oil;
instead, there are results for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (C16-C36).
i
look forward to hearing from you by this Friday, February 14th, and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any j
questions.
I
Vicki McCartney SJCEHD
304 E.
