Two soil samples taken from beneath two of
the USTs contained low concentrations of methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) and
tertiary-amyl methyl ether (TAME), in addition to tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and total
xylenes found in one of these samples. The potential that a release occurred from the
UST system removed in February 2003 is significant, and further investigation of
contamination in soil and groundwater in those areas will be necessary.
EHD has not received the report documenting the destruction of the groundwater
monitoring and ozone sparge wells; removal of USTs, piping, and fuel dispensers; and
site demolition activities. Please submit this report by 7 July 2003.
It is also necessary to prepare a work plan for the installation of monitoring wells at this
site now that demolition and removal have been completed. Please submit a work plan
for additional site investigation and installation of monitoring wells by 21 July 2003.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding these activities, please contact
Vicki McCartney by mail (address on letter head), or by telephone at (209)468-3456.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Services
Vicki McCartney Margagonio, EHS
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor, Unit IV
cc: James L.L.
