WC(11RNIA-HEALTH AND WELFA RE AGE NCY PETE WILSON Governor
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES
OFFICE OF DRINKING WATER
6455 JACKSON ROAD,SUITE 120
SACRAMENTO,CA 95826
(916)739-4034
April 9, 1991
Thomas A Hickey, Project Engineer
Black & Veatch, Consulting Engineers
Post Office Box 8405
Kansas City, Missouri 64114
Subject: Marley Cooling Tower -
Remedial Ground Water Treatment
The plans and specifications, for the Marley Cooling Tower
Company, to pipe contaminated ground water to a treatment
system for removal of the contaminants, have arrived and
have been thoroughly reviewed.
It was difficult to determine from the plans if adequate
separation is being provided. Parallel separation from the
existing water mains needs to be at least 4 feet edge to
edge. Vertical separation at perpendicular crossings needs
to have 1 foot vertical separation edge to edge with the
water main being above the industrial main.
When the water main crosses beneath the industrial main
mitigating measures must be taken. The use of schedule 80
plastic pipe is acceptable as one of those measures.
Please include the required separations on the plans as well
as in the specifications.
i
Homer R Vaughn, P. .
Lead Engineer
Stockton District
Office of Drinking Water
cc: Environmental Health Division, San Joaquin Public Health
Services
Mike Camy, California Water Service
HRV/hv
['.159\S US N..I ev9l l lP
P
