The extraction wells will remove water from the top of the water table by <br /> pumping from the extraction well casings. Extracted water will be pumped <br /> to and stored in an extracted water holding tank prior to treatment by a <br /> high strength waste treatment system (MCTC Contract No. 15) that will be <br /> constructed in the vicinity of the retort pit. <br /> Implementation of the subsurface soil flushing system will be a phased <br /> process as outlined below: <br /> Phase I Construction of Pilot Flushing System. <br /> Phase II Conduct and Evaluate Pilot Study. <br /> Phase III Construction of Full-Scale Flushing System. <br /> Phase IV Long-Term Flushing System Operation and Monitoring. <br /> The construction and operation of the subsurface soil flushing system is <br /> described in Sections 2.1 and 2.2 of this document. <br /> 1.3 SCOPE OF SAMPLING AND MONITORING ACTIVITIES <br /> The scope of appropriate sampling and monitoring activities to be <br /> conducted for the subsurface soil flushing system as described within <br /> Section 3.0 of this document include the following activities: <br /> • Subsurface soil sampling for chemical and physical analyses. <br /> • Monitoring well , lysimeter, and piezometer sampling. <br /> • Water level and neutron probe monitoring. <br /> • Injection water flow rate monitoring. <br /> • Extracted water flow rate monitoring and chemical analyses. <br /> The parties who will be responsible for conducting the sampling and <br /> monitoring activities are designated within this document. In the event <br /> that any of the designated firms or their subcontractors are not used to <br /> complete the indicated tasks, the agencies will be notified of the <br /> substitution of other firms. <br /> 11654.652 1-3 <br />
