2.0 OPERATING DESCRIPTION
2. 1 CONSTRUCTION OF SUBSURFACE SOIL FLUSHING SYSTEM
Implementation of the subsurface soil flushing system will be a phased
process as outlined below:
Phase I Construction of Pilot Flushing System.
Phase II Conduct and Evaluate Pilot Study.
Phase III Construction of Full-Scale Flushing System.
Phase IV Long-Term Flushing System Operation and Monitoring.
Construction details for the subsurface soil flushing system are provided
in MCTC's Contract No. 13 plans and specifications. MCTC will select a
contractor to perform the Phase I and Phase III construction activities
described in the following subsections. MCTC, Black & Veatch, and a
specialized subcontractor will be responsible for various activities
during Phases II and IV as discussed in Section 2.2.
2.1.1 Phase I Construction of Pilot Flushing System
The pilot flushing system will be constructed at the southwest corner of
the retort pit as shown on Figure 1-2 and will consist of the following
components:
• Two vertical injection wells.
(screened intervals from 20 feet to approximately 70 feet below
land surface (bls) as determined by the lithology and the
existing water table elevation data from monitoring wells MW-206
and MW-214)
• Six neutron probe monitoring tubes.
(Installed to 20 feet below the ground water table encountered
at the time of drilling. )
• Injection water supply piping.
(temporary water supply from city water service)
• Extracted water supply piping.
(temporary discharge piping to MW-214 effluent piping system)
Injection water supply for the pilot system will be provided by a gravity
system that utilizes a small tank or drum to store water obtained from the
city water service. The extracted water piping from MW-206 to MW-214 will
be used throughout the pilot study activities at the site. The extracted
water piping system from MW-214 is routed to an electrochemical water
treatment system at the facility that was installed under MCTC Contract
No. 9.
11654.652 P-1
