2.2 OPERATION OF SUBSURFACE SOIL FLUSHING SYSTEM
The operation of the pilot and full-scale flushing systems will require
minimal operator attention. The injection water systems for the pilot and
full-scale systems will be gravity fed from a temporary holding vessel and
an existing tank, respectively. The supply of injection water for the
Pilot system will be maintained by a float valve that will adjust the flow
of city water to the temporary holding vessel . The supply of injection
water stored in the full-scale injection water holding tank will be
automatically maintained by a flow control system. When sufficient
effluent flow exists in the existing effluent force main, the full-scale
injection water holding tank will be refilled with treated effluent. If
the effluent force main flow is insufficient, water from the city water
service to the wood treatment building will automatically refill the full-
scale injection water holding tank.
Based upon estimates of hydraulic conductivity, the anticipated injection
rates range from 0.2 to 5.2 gallons per minute (gpm) per well , with rates
less than 1.0 gpm being more likely. During the pilot study, flow meters
will be used to measure the total flow into the two injection wells and
out of MW-206. MW-206 will be capable of pumping up to 8 gpm and will
have a radius of influence greater than 100 feet.
During full scale operation, the eleven injection wells will be injecting
at an approximate combined rate of 11 gpm (57 gpm maximum) . EW-2 will be
capable of extracting up to 50 gpm of water, with a radius of influence
greater than 200 feet. Flow meters will be used to measure the total flow
rate into the injection wells and out of MW-206 and EW-2.
As discussed previously, the extracted water will be pumped to water
treatment systems at MCTC' s facility.
Specific operational aspects of the Phase II and Phase IV activities are
discussed in the subsections below.
2.2. 1 Phase II Pilot Flushing System Operation
The Phase II activities will be used to test the effectiveness of the
flushing system and identify appropriate full-scale modifications. The
pilot study activities at the site will be conducted for approximately two
months. During this time, a specialized consultant, retained by MCTC,
will monitor the water table elevation and the moisture content of the
11654.652 2-3
