A Black & Veatch geological engineer or geologist will log the soil
borings for the injection wells, neutron probe monitoring tubes,
lysimeters, and the extraction well . Black & Veatch personnel and MCTC' s
contractor will also collect soil samples and submit them for physical and
chemical analyses as discussed in Section 3.2. 1.
2.1.2 Phase III Construction of Full-Scale Flushing System
The full-scale flushing system will be constructed during Phase III
activities at the site as shown on Figure 1-2 and will be modified as
appropriate based on the results of the Phase II pilot study evaluation.
The additional components of the subsurface soil flushing system to be
installed during Phase III construction include:
• Six vertical injection wells.
(screened intervals from 20 feet to approximately 70 feet bls)
• Three angled injection wells.
(screened intervals from 20 feet to approximately 50 feet bls)
• Six neutron probe monitoring tubes.
(Installed to 20 feet below the ground water table encountered
at the time of drilling. )
• One extraction well .
(EW-2 will be 125 feet bls and screened 70 to 120 feet bls)
• Injection water supply piping.
(an existing tank will be used as an injection water holding
tank)
• Extracted water supply piping.
(discharge to an existing tank used as an extracted water
holding tank)
The primary source for the full-scale injection water supply system will
be the existing effluent force main from MCTC's water treatment systems.
The secondary source of water for the full-scale system will be city
water. The full-scale injection water supply system will be a gravity
system that utii"izes an existing tank located adjacent to the retort pit.
The full-scale extracted water piping system from MW-206 and EW-2 will
discharge to another existing tank that is also located adjacent to the
retort pit. Effluent from the extracted water holding tank will be piped
to a high strength waste treatment system to be constructed under MCTC' s
Contract No. 15. The tentative location for the high strength waste
treatment system is shown on Figure 1-2.
11654.652 2-2
