3.1.3 Phase III Objectives
• Identify the lithology variation across the site by logging the
injection wells, monitoring tubes, lysimeters, and the extraction
well .
• Retrieve soil samples for the following chemical and physical
analyses:
- arsenic, copper, hexavalent chromium, and total chromium
concentrations
- dry bulk density, specific gravity, and gravimetric moisture
content
• Retrieve ground water samples from extraction wells for chemical
analyses.
3.1.4 Phase IV Objectives
• Identify and monitor the chemical characteristics of the pore water
and ground water.
• Monitor the degree of saturation by periodically utilizing neutron
probe equipment.
• Monitor lateral migration of flushed water.
• Monitor and assess the total effectiveness of the soil flushing
activities.
• Continue operation of subsurface soil flushing until hexavalent
chromium concentrations within the pore water and the ground water
have reached steady state conditions.
3.2 SAMPLING PROCEDURES AND ANALYTICAL METHODS
Subsurface soil , ground water, and pore water samples will be collected
during implementation of subsurface soil remediation activities at the
retort pit. The collection methods, and analytical , preservation, and
container requirements for these samples are presented in the following
subsections. Table 3-1 presents the laboratory analyses, sampling
containers, sample preservation requirements, and allowable holding times
for soil and water samples in accordance with 40 Code of Federal
Regulations 135.
3.2.1 Subsurface Soil Sampling
The objective of subsurface sampling is to obtain soil from known depths
and lithologies to evaluate the site hydrogeologic characteristics and
obtain information on the concentration of contaminants within these
soils. Table 3-2 presents the subsurface soil sampling to be conducted
during the implementation of the flushing system as discussed below.
11654.652 3-2
