"To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards
out of men." - Abraham Lincoln
Log of calls about Marley Cooling Towers Co. Inc. Groundwater
pollution and Dumpsite at 1816 Walker Lane, Near Stockton
CA. By D.H.Murray
April 17, 2000
Kerry Romaine Regional Water Quality Control board (RWQCB) said Marley
Cooling Towers has a National Pollution Distraction Elimination (NPDE)
permit to release treated water from extraction wells. The Marley
Cooling Towers Co. Inc. address is 150 N. Sinclair. These wells are used
to pull contaminated water from the water table. They then clean it up
and release it into the Stockton Diverting Canal. They submit tests
monthly and are sometimes checked by the state. A plume about a mile
in diameter is being monitored. It contains HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM.
This is the toxic substance released by PG&E in it's cooling equipment
depicted in the true movie Erin Broc avitch, starring Julia 15, 2000 and is highly oberts. This
film will be released on video on Aug
ust recommended for anyone who has been affected by cancer or other
illnesses which may be attributed to Hexavalent Chromium also known as
"Chrome 6" or "soluble chromium". It was used as a wood preservative in
the Marley operation.
I asked Ms Romaine if neighbors had been notified of the danger. She said
that yes they had. And she thought no one used well water for drinking
in this area because it tasted so bad due to high mineral content and salt
intrusion. She further said that the municipal systems used surface ater
from Stockton East Water District (SEWD). I told her many people w
ere
used to drinking the water from wells in the general area and still drink it.
I asked if she was aware that several people had contracted cancer in the
area. She said that the agency Aa aware of cancer clusters in the area.
Kerry Romaine will be only working a couple of days more so she will give
my request to her boss: John Russell at 916-255-3066. She asked I give
him a week to prepare for my call. I told her about the dump on Walker
lane between Main St. and Hy 4. And requested information on it.
She suggested I call Charlie Ridenour at the Department of Toxic
Substances Control 916-255-3714 who deals with surface toxics.
t
