Charlie asked me exactly where the dumpsite was. I said I would look it
up at the County records office and call back. I called and left a message
that the site is Assessors parcel number 173-27-13 and the site address
is 1816 Walker lane and it was owned by Marley Cooling Towers Co. Inc.
until they sold it to Cheng Lee in 1993. Lee has a mailing address in
Pleasanton. Same address but different name as the owner of another
parcel #173-12-13 who has owned it since 1988
Rudy Lopez who lives on Walker lane, said one time a water tester got
stuck in an unmarked pickup and had to get a towtruck. The man told
Rudy he wouldn't drink this water.
Rudy had no knowledge of notice that the water was not safe. He
checked with neighbors who had not been notified either. He said a
husband died of cancer about 15 years ago and his wife just died of
cancer. The house is now for sale on Main Street just West of Walker Ln.
Several others have had cancer in the area. His dogs have had tumors
too.
Rudy said that Angelo Cueno farmed the back of the Marley property on
Walker lane some time ago and saw them dump a liquid to the east of the
sawdust pile.
Wed. April 19, 2000, 1 Returned call to Duncan Austin who has a desk
across from Charlie Ridenour at the Department of Toxic Substances
Control which is a division of California EPA, a state agency. 916-255-
3706.
Duncan Austin said his agency is the lead agency for the Marley clean up
which has been going on for many years, since the late 1980's or early
1990's. He is the Project manager of the site mitigation unit. He said
this is the first he has heard that Marley had a dumpsite. He said that
even the sawdust would contained the toxins including hexavalent
Chromium if it came from the wood that was treated. That is where the
Pollution came from, the wood treatment part of Marley. He has an X-
ray machine that can quickly determine if the chromium level is high.
However the machine is down for maintenance and funding for repairs is
hard to get. He said it might take a month to get it fixed and do some
tests at the dumpsite. He said there are so many toxic sites in California
that there is a lot of competition for funding. They have to fight for
every dollar with other projects.
2
