Polymers as a clearing agent. In theory, if the correct amount is used, all
the polymers will be removed with the precipitated sedimentation they
are intended to remove. But in a municipal system if they don't use
enough, the water is cloudy and they get complaints, so guess if they use
the correct amount or use a little extra? They often use a little extra
which then leaves some in the water. Polymers are not good for your
health. There are so many possible contaminates and it can take years
to affect people. The cancer rate is very high now. Avoid bad water.
In Chico, he said, they have dry cleaning fluid contaminating the water.
He feels it is best to get pure water from a good source.
Mike Clark of Clark Well Drilling Co. told me on May 1 Oth that the pumps a
brand they had never before used were ordered and installed in 1984.
Twenty of them for the Marley extraction wells.
More Questions & Answers asked by Dave Murray (DHM) of Duncan Austin
(DA) 916-255-3706 on May 15, 2000.
DHM: Is a map available showing the plume in East Stockton?
DA: Yes. He will send the oldest and newest map to me by mail.
DHM: How were well users (or public water users) informed of the danger
of chrome 6 in the water and when were they informed?
DA said if wells are found to have toxins in them the well is shut down.
No one is informed that they have been drinking bad water in the past.
Marley would not want to inform any one because they would be
admitting they did something wrong and would then be more liable to be
sued. This is an area that is not well defined. His state agency cleans
up spills but does not notify people unless the well has to be shut down.
As an example, he said that the Aerojet site the lawyers put adds in the
newspaper asking for anyone who had been drinking water in the area to
contact them. This was the first notice for many there. Another state
agency, The Department of Health Services Environmental Health Division
does etiology studies, the branch of medicine that investigates the
causes and origins of disease. They do this to try to determine how
much and which kind of toxic chemical makes people sick. These efforts
are not for warning people, just to get data on the relationship of toxics
and illness. They publish the results in scientific journals.
4
