DHM: Are people being informed and being reminded
occasionally of the danger who have wells within in the toxic
plume area?
DA: No. There is no mechanism for this.
DHM: At what level of Hexavelant Chromium does Cal Water shut down
wells. Have any been shut off?
DA: A couple of wells were shut down because the draw was pulling the
toxic plume toward them making it hard to clean it up. These wells are
near Marley cooling towers.
Now some labs can test down to 2ppb of Chrome 6. The maximum safe
level, 5ppb, may be reexamined.
DHM: How will this plume affect or be affected by the proposed Mormon
channel Restoration Project which, when completed, sometimes move
surface water through the old channel?
DA: The Mormon Channel Restoration Project will probably help block the
plume from moving further south so it would aid in the cleanup.
DHM: Will the plume affect water quality in the Mormon? Could the
chrome 6 get into that water?
DA: No. The plume is lower the farther it is from Marley's plant. It is
well below the Mormon Channel bottom and would not pollute the surface
water that may be put into the channel.
DHM: How is the cleanup of the water being done?
DA: The water is pumped out of wells, and then, depending on the level of
Chrome 6 run through one of two filters: one is an ion exchange (a water
softener) and the other is magnetic based with a polymer. The polymer
combines with the Chrome and the magnets attract it. The water that
is cleaned is put into the Diverting Canal. It is difficult putting even pure
well water into a river because the well water in the central valley has so
much more TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) than the river water has.
DA: As to the so far undisclosed dump on Walker Lane. He passed the
information along to the "Complaint Department". They did not want to
file on it since they like to catch people in the act of dumping and Marley
had sold the site in 1993. Duncan Austin will take samples in a few
weeks since his machine is still broken, and then, if there are toxins in
5
