Calculation of Secondary Containment Capacity
SILVA TRUCKING — FRENCH CAMP TERMINAL
36 West Mathews Road, French Camp, California
DIESEL FUEL BERM CONTAINMENT CAPACITY:
General top view shape is a rectangle with Area of:
A = LXW
L = 39 feet south end length less berm wall width (8-inch) = 39 - ( 2 X 8 / 12 ) = 37.7 feet
W = 18 feet east end width less berm wall width (8-inch) = 18 - ( 2 X 8 / 12 ) = 16.7 feet
A = 37.7 X 16.7 = 629.6 square feet
Volume V = AXhXc
h = 3 feet high
c = cubic feet to gallon conversion = 7.48 gallons per cubic foot
V= 629.6 X 3 X 7.48 = 14,128 gallons
110% of 10,000 gallon diesel AST + 110% of 1,000 gallon diesel exhaust fluid AST =
11,000 + 1,100 = 12,100 gallons
The diesel fuel berm has a capacity of 14,128 gallons. The diesel fuel berm will contain 110% of
the diesel AST volume (11,000 gallons) and the diesel exhaust fluid (1,100 gallons). The concrete
berm is deemed sufficient.
MAINTENANCE BUILDING RAISED BERM EDGES CONTAINMENT CAPACITY
General top view shape is two rectangles with Area of 5,440 square feet. The containment
capacity within the building walls is equivalent to the surface area multiplied by the 3-inch
perimeter berm (10,173 gallons). The bulk oil AST (400 gallons) is the largest within the
maintenance building. The indoor retention capacity is sufficient for containment of a spill.
