(Shaw) and has the following comments.
The Report included the first quarter 2004 groundwater monitoring and sampling report. In April
2003, four additional groundwater monitoring wells were installed at this site. Two of the wells,
MW-2R and MW-3R, are shallow; one, MW-4R-S, is screened to total depth 50 feet below surface
grade (bsg) and one, MW-4R-D is discretely screened from 75-8b feet bsg. The reported sampling
event was the fifth time these new wells have been monitored and sampled, with the exception of
MW-2R, which has been sampled only twice due to access issues. Analytical results indicate that
the lateral and vertical extent of the groundwater contamination at this site has not been defined.
In correspondence dated August 18, 2003, SJC/EHD expressed concerns over the methodology of
an air sparge test that had been conducted by Shaw in April 2003. SJC/EHD recommended that
the test be redesigned to demonstrate actual capture of sparged hydrocarbons. No response to
this recommendation has been received by this agency.
Please submit a work plan to continue the investigation of the vertical and lateral extent of the
groundwater contamination at your site. The work plan is due for submittal by July 23, 2004. In
addition, monitoring well MW-2 must be sampled at all routine groundwater monitoring and
sampling events. You are directed to ensure that access to this well is provided each quarter. If
you cannot provide access to this well, it must be properly destroyed under permit and inspection,
and another well installed at a suitable location at which access will not be an issue.
If you have any questions, please call Lori Duncan at (209)468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Department
mc
Lori Duncan, Senior REHS Nuel C.
