fittings for later connection to the air injection piping and the air compressor. Fittings will also
be made to the existing monitoring wellheads for later connection to monitoring instruments,
including downhole probes and wellhead vapor detectors.
All drilling equipment will be decontaminated prior to and after use. Drilling equipment will be
decontaminated by steam cleaning. Non -disposable sampling equipment will be decontaminated
by the following procedure: wash with a mixture of non -phosphate soap (e.g., Alconox"') in tap
water, rinse with tap water, and then rinse with deionized water.
Because the well will be used for air injection as a biosparge well, no well development will be
performed following installation.
5.3 Groundwater Sampling
Groundwater samples will be collected from wells MW-4RS, MW -7S, and VW -21) for the
inorganic and nutrient analyses prior to biosparge testing. Groundwater samples will be
collected with the use of a low -flow pump with a flow-through cell. Water level and water
quality parameters (temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and oxygen -
reduction potential (ORP) will be measured in each well throughout purging. Depth to water,
date and time will be noted for each monitoring location. Sample collection will begin when
successive purge measurements meet the following criteria:
• pH +/- 0.1 pH unit;
• Temperature +/- 1 degree Fahrenheit;
• Conductivity +/- 5%; and
• DO +/- 10%.
Samples will be collected directly into laboratory -prepared containers, then capped, labeled and
placed on ice in an insulated ice chest. The samples will then be transported under chain -of -
custody manifest to a California -certified analytical laboratory via overnight courier.
5.4 Equipment Installation
The air injection system will consist of a portable, tank -mounted air compressor unit and rigid
' galvanized steel piping. No equipment pad will be required for the air compressor unit. Either
an onsite electrical supply or a generator will be used to power the compressor. The steel pipe
will be installed aboveground and connect the air compressor to the sparge well. Instruments,
such as pressure gauge and flow meter, and valves will be installed on the piping. Additional
monitoring ports will be installed on the piping as well as at the other observation wells.
I
Biosparge Pilot Test Final doc 5-2 Shaw Environmental, Inc.
