As there is virtually no exposed screen left in the vadose zone, soil
vapor extraction technology would not continue to be efficient at removing hydrocarbons from the
subsurface. Also, decreasing the number of wells being used for vapor extraction.may aid in increasing
hydrocarbon removal rates.
It is unknown at this time if the system has truly reached asymptotic levels or if the decline in efficiency is
related to the rise in the water table at the site. Additional wells, screened for the purpose of increasing
the efficiency of hydrocarbon removal, may be proposed and installed in the core areas of the plume at
this site. Alternatively, the site may continue to be monitored and information demonstrating the.plume to
be stable or declining and of low risk to human'health and the environment may be collected and
submitted to PHS-EHD for review. However, the inefficiency of the soil vapor extraction system at this site
must be addressed in either case.
Please provide an update on the status of the cleanup at this site in the next quarterly report.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss this letter in more detail, please contact Linda Turkatte,
Senior REHS, at(209)468-3441.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
"Linda aTurkatte, Senior REHS Margare agorio, RE
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
LT
c: CVRWQCB, Beth Thayer
c: Enviros, Diane Lundquist
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
