(AGE) on your
behalf to address the directive issued by EHD by letters dated 28 September
2005 and 13 February 2006 to initiate interim groundwater remediation to reduce
the dissolved contaminant mass and gain hydrological control of the shallow
portion of your groundwater plume.
The WP proposes to advance three soil borings to be completed as soil vapor
extraction (SVE) wells and two borings to be completed as groundwater
extraction (GWE) wells, and to conduct an SVE pilot test and a GWE pilot test.
The SVE wells will be advanced to a total depth of 35 feet below surface grade
(bsg), the GWE wells will be advanced to a total depth of 65 feet bsg.
EHD approves the WP as proposed. As part of the analytical regimen of soil
samples, it may be beneficial to analyze representative, uncontaminated samples
for total organic content (TOC) and soil oxygen demand (SOD) to evaluate the
potential for ozone (or other oxidizing agent) injection if needed at a later time.
Your consultant's concern with pulling in contamination from the nearby eastern
and western sites was noted in the WP. If this seems to be a potential concern,
an amended work plan should be submitted to install sentinel well(s) to detect
such plume movement. The plume on the site toward the west does not seem to
have much potential to impact your site as it is a significant distance down- or
cross-gradient from your site.
As noted in the 28 September 2005 and 13 February 2006 letters, it is necessary
to continue the vertical and lateral assessment of your plume. Monitoring wells
previously approved by this office have not been installed. Your consultant has
inquired whether or not the multilevel wells can still be installed on and near your
site. The use of multilevel wells on contaminated sites has resulted in difficulties
with properly destroying the wells. As your site does not fit EHD's profile of sites
