mm" Brothers Service SUYM 7 Duch 7, IM
L SITE CHARACTERIZATION
Soil BoringDries' g and Samg&g
Prior to drilling, Underground Service Alert (USA) will be notified a minimum of 48
Lhours in advance of drilling activities. A total of seven soil borings will be drilled
within this phase of soil characterization (Figure 2). A sWl hating 4XH-1) ill tie
advanced through a ern o the former eastern 5,000 gallon gasoline tank
to assess the vertical extent source. Four soil
borings {TH-2 through - wi assess the lateral extent of gasoline
ccfncentrations in tlf o'l. A soil boring (TH-6) will be advanced through ttie former
Lation of the product pipeline a cent to the n ern sparser island to assess _
the vertical extent of impacted ii''i;111''111 111111 th this probable e. The sesol
boring ATH-7) will be positioned to assess the lateral extent of gasoline
Lconcentrations in the soil in 6ibaarea. exibility will be maintained to adjust the
coca va o on observations in the field. Drilling will be
Laccomplished using a truck mounted Mobile"" B-53 or CMEM 55 drill rig utilizing 4
3!4-inch diameter hollow-stem auger. The borings will be drilled to a maximum
Ldepth of either 1) first groundwater, if less than 4W from grade, or 2) drilling refusal
due to impenetrable soil or granite, or 3) W at each boring, or 4) ten continuous feet
` of soils not contaminated (based on screening by PID). If field screening indicates
Lthat fuel hydrocarbons are present when drilling has reached a depth offeet,
then- permission will be obtained from the client to continue to drill the borings to a
depth where ten conseculLyc feet of unim cta -soff is encountered, or groundwater.
If groundwater is encountered in any of the borings, then drilling will be
Lterminated, and a bailer will bg lowered into the well to collect a water sample. ,
samyle will be observed for evidence of floatin product, sheen, odor, and
Liscoloration. a P'ID will be used to field screen the sample. The results will be
recorded on the field boring log. However, ESE does not intend to submit the grab
j samples for laboratory analysis. ESE will submit grab samples only at the written
Lrequest of the County's representative. The results of the laboratory analysis will be
communicated to the Client and County's representative, but will not be included in
L, any written report prepared by ESE. ESE is pursuing this policy since grab samples
from the inside of drill augers which have penetrated impacted soil at shallower
Ldepths have a high probability of producing a false reading of impacted
EB-9101-1 9203-Eo 16.WP
