16 April 1997
AGE-NC Project No . 95 -0121
3 . 2 . 2, PROPOSED IN-SITU AIR SPARG [NG SYSTEM LOCATION AND DESIGN
The IAS compressor will operate independently from the SVE unit . This %w ill allow for control of the
air flow to the sparge points and "surging' of the IAS system, if necessary, to prevent mounding
and/or migration of the dissolved hydrocarbons . A separate electrical source and meter will be
J necessary for the [AS system.
i
A one-inch diameter PVC pipe will carry air from the blower to the sparging points. The PVC piping
will be installed beneath the ground surface. A plan of the proposed piping system is depicted in
Figure 6.
3 . 2 . 3 . PROPOSED MONITORING ACTIVITIES
Quarterly ground water monitoring and sampling is proposed throughout the remediation period .
However, we recommend monthly measurements of ground water depth and dissolved oxygen in
monitoring wells h1W- 1 through MW-9 on a monthly basis to determine if ground water mounding
is occurring as a result of the operation of the IAS system .
3 . 3 . PERMITTING
{{{ An application for a site specific permit will be submitted to the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution
'I Control District (SJVAPCD) prior to initiation of the remediation project In addition, proper building
1 pemuts will be obtained from the City of Stockton Building Department for necessary construction
work, including natural gas and electrical source installations.
3 . 4 . SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
The SVE/IAS system will be maintained on a weekly basis, according to manufacturers
recommendations. After stabilization, routine maintenance would represent the only periods of
"down time ' for the unit. One to two times each month (assuming 24 -hour operation), the unit will
be shut down for routine maintenance procedures such as lubrication, oil changing, and system
adjustments.
3 . 5 . CONFIRMATION SOIL SAMPLING
After approximately six months of operation or efficiency of the unit has declined, confirmation soil
sampling should be performed withing the "core" impacted area. The confirmation soil borings will
