u
16 April 1997
AGE-NC Project No . 95 -0121
4 . 2 . INSTALLATION OF IN-SITU AIR SPARGING POINTS
The following procedures will be performed for the installation of air sparging points :
1 . Prepare a Site Health and Safety Plan in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health
Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities - Prepared by National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U. S . Coast
Guard and U. S . Environmental Protection Agency, October 1985 .
2 . Notify the San Joaquin County Enviromnental Public Health Services - Environmental Health
Division (PHS -EHD) 48 hours prior to commencement of any Bork, while securing proper
city/county soil boring or well permits.
'I
3 . .Air sparging locations will be marked at least 48 hours in advance for an Underground
Service Alert (USA) check of underground utilities or pipes.
II
4 . Advance seven soil probe borings to a total depth of approximately 30 feet bsg using a
Geoprobe 5400 probing unit equipped with 1 . 125 -inch diameter probe rods. Soil
boring/probing locations are depicted on Figure 7.
5 . AJI probing rods will be cleaned prior to boring advancement .
6 . Complete each soil probe boring as an in-situ air sparging point - Each soil probe boring will
be completed using 3 '/2- feet of 3/8 -inch diameter stainless steel screen from an approximate
depth of 26. 5 to 30 feet bsg. Polyethylene tubing (3 /8-inch diameter) will be used to provide
injected air from surface grade to the sparge point. A filter pack will be installed utilizing glass
beads (50- 100 mesh) from depths of 25 to 30 feet bsg, while a bentonite plug will be placed
from depths of 20 to 25 feet bsg. Each point will then be backfilled to surface grade utilizing
Portland Type Il cement. IAS injection point construction diagrams are depicted in Figure 8 .
43 . CONFIRMATION SOIL SAMPLING
The following procedures will be performed for the advancement of confirmation soil borings:
1 . Prepare a Site Health and Safety Plan in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health
Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities - Prepared by National Institute for
i Occupational Safety and Health, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U. S . Coast
Guard and U. S . Environmental Protection Agency, October 1985 .
2 . Notify the San Joaquin County Environmental Public Health Services - EnvironmenW Health
Division (PHS-EHD) 48 hours prior to commencement of any work, while securing proper
1 city/county boring permits.
i
