The PID field screening of the soil samples should
provide a qualitative indication of the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons. The PID
meesures total ionizable compounds in air in parts per million by volume (pTmv) in
relation to a select calibration standard.
For the protection of the field crew. the PID will also be used to measure the total v_,latile
concentrations in the breathing zone prior to and during the drilling of the soil borings.
3.3 MONITORING WELL CONSTRUCTION
W The wells will be installed in soil borings advanced with a truck mounted drill rig equipped
with 8-inch hollow kzrr- augers. The welis «-ill be 10 to 20 feet bellow first encountered
ground water. Based on the results of the soil assessment, ground water is anticipated at
approximately 25 feet below the ground surface: however due to drought conditions ground
water may be encoumered at deeper levels.
The proposed construction details for the ground water monitoring wells are as follows:
o The wells will be constructed in 8-inch boreholes.
o The well casing will be 2-inch inside diameter, flush-threaded joint, schedule
40 PVC pipe.
o The screened section may be set I to 5 feet above and 10 to 20 feet below the
depth where ground water is first encountered unless:
1. Semi-confined or confined aquifer conditions are encountered.
2. High petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations are indicated in the
ground water.
3. An aquitard is encountered.
F13-90-66 5 ,
