VAKa.,...
2
results,Nomellini Construction decided to backfill the excavation with clean fill and
further assess the extent of the contamination with a soil boring program.
In May, 1989,Kleinfelder supervised 6e drilling of nine soil borings(B-1 through B-9)
in the vicinity of the former tank es ontain,4 total petroleuit. Samples were m hydrocarbons ed from asths of 10.5 gasoline atto 26
le els
feet. Ten of lS soil sarnp
ranging from nondetect to 450 ppm.
Higb concentrations of TPH a5 gasoline(MV-9),benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,and
xylenes(BTEX)were detected just above and below the groundwater surface in boring
B-1 which was located adjacent to the south edge of the excavation. Similarly, high
TPH-g concentrations were detected just above the groundwater surface in 13-2,
approximately 20 feet north of the former tank excavation. The remaining samples had
relatively low concentrations detected, but TPHs were consistently detected just above the
groundwater surface. Groundwater was encountered at a depth of about 25 feet below
ground surface.
In February,1991,Kleinfelder drilled three borings B-10 through B-12. These borings
were subsequently converted into monitor wells MW-1 through MW-3. TPH-g was
detected in the groundwater in February, 1991 in MW-1 thraugh MW-3 at concentrations
of 1,700 ppm, 10,000 ppm and 1,500 ppm, respectively, In June, 1991, 1.5 feet of free
product was measured in MW-l. The groundwater gradient has generally varied between
the northeast to southeast.
9
=Artesian Environmental Consul measured hydrocarbon thickness'19 MW-1 on Manch,
Y16*499216 be'-1.82'ftkr..,GfdbWdWattr ow direction orr'Parch 16,'1992,was ta''tlie_,r
southeast"Watardcpth was.measured on March 16,1992 for MW-1 through MW-3 at
32:5:32.7-'ad 32..,`ecticlow ground su- ace,i s ectvely.. t
REMOVAL OF FREE PRODUCT
Free product removal is a high priority activity for the site. Product bailing in MW-1
using a dedicated bailer is being performed on the site on a weekly basis. The free
Product is collected and stored in 55 gallon drums, pending proper disposal. A full scale
groundwater and soil remediation plan will be submitted to the appropriate agencies after
the data from the proposed three monitor wells is evaluated.
SOIL PELF SAMPLING
Four sail samples vill be collected in the approximately 50 cubic yard pile of previously
'excavated sail, The samples will be composited into one sample and analyzed for total
extractable petroleum hydrocarbons(TEPH)and benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,and
xylenes(BTEX),by EPA Methods 8015 and 8020,respectively.-.'Discrete soil samples:..
will be collected and analyzed for total lead,_RCF,and STCL lead.
1 • /
u
